How to Pack Furniture For Moving - Singh Movers

How to Pack Furniture For Moving

Moving to a new place can be exciting, but it can also feel like an overwhelming amount of work. Packing your furniture is the biggest component of any move. If you collect the right material and wrap your pieces carefully, you can ensure that they survive the move in good shape. Just be sure to break down larger items before packing, if possible. You also want to be extra careful with fragile items by using extra layers of protection.

Making a Plan and Gathering Your Supplies

Decide which furniture to take apart. Moving can be difficult, especially if you have a lot of large and heavy furniture. If possible, you want to disassemble objects that do not fit through doorways or down a narrow staircase.

A list of items you want to disassemble might include:

  • Beds

  • Armoires or wall cabinets

  • Tables

  • Desks

Take pictures of each piece of furniture you want to take apart.

Take multiple pictures to record each step of the process. You can refer to the pictures when you put the piece back together.

Buy packaging materials.

For example, items such as sofas will generally be packed in blankets and tape. Something like a lamp can be wrapped in bubble wrap. You can buy supplies at your local hardware store or online. Potential deliveries include:

  • Sofa / mattress cover or blankets

  • Bubble wrap

  • Plastic wrap

  • Packaging / sealing tape

2. Disassembling Large Items

Remove the cushions and take apart the sofa by uncovering the frame.

  • Roll the upholstery far enough so that you can see the sofa frame and the fasteners that hold the arms against the base.

  • Loosen the screws or bolts that secure the arms with a screwdriver or an Allen wrench .

  • Look for the bolts that hold the seat and back of the sofa together.

  • Write down carefully so that you remember how to reassemble the sofa.

  • Undo only as much attire as is necessary. Follow the same steps to disassemble an armchair.

Remove the seat back and wheels to break down a desk chair.

Unscrew table legs to disassemble a table.

You may also need to unscrew the legs from the table. Carefully turn them to the left until they come off easily.

Pack the braces and screws separately in a clearly marked bag.

Remove the headboard and footboard to begin disassembling your bed.

  • If your bed frame has slats, unscrew each slat and remove them from the frame.

Remove knobs and other removable pieces from dressers and desks.

For example, if you have a kitchen trolley, remove the wheels and any protruding handles.

If you move somewhere locally, you may have non-fragile items in your drawers. You need to fill the box with wrapping paper so that things do not move around.

Packaging your furniture

Cover furniture with blankets or upholstery.

To best protect your furniture, wrap it gently with pads or blankets.

For larger pieces you need several blankets or pads.

Fold in table and chair legs with blankets or pads.

Secure covers with plastic wrap

For long-distance movements, the plastic wrap will also prevent dirt from getting to your furniture.

Place cardboard pieces on the corners of desks and dressers and on table glass.

You can do this for pieces of wooden furniture, such as a drawers or a desk, to prevent the corners from getting damaged during the move.

Place a piece of strong cardboard over glass plates. Secure with packing tape.

Wrap fragile items with bubble wrap.

Dealing with Small or Fragile Items

Wrap your mirrors using tape and cardboard. Use masking tape to create multiple X-shapes on the front of each of your mirrors. This prevents the glass from shattering if you accidentally bump into or drop the mirror. Cut small pieces of cardboard to place them over the edges of each corner. Secure the box with tape.

Wrap your TV by covering it with a cloth and securing with plastic wrap.

Be sure to tape all the wires on the TV base so that they do not get in the way.

Wrap your lamp in the newspaper.

Wrap bar stools in bubble tape. Bar stools are generally quite difficult to disassemble, so it is best to make sure they are protected from moving. wrap the legs in bubble wrap and secure with packing tape.

Pack a baking rack by covering it with blankets or pads.. Empty the baker's rack before packing. Move items such as dishes, food and cookbooks separately. Wrap the empty rack into a blanket or pad and secure it with plastic wrap. Secure all doors with zippers or ropes.

Cover filing cabinets with blankets. Empty your filing cabinets and pack the contents in a box. Make sure you have important documents such as birth certificates and other legal documents with you during the move.

Loading the Moving Truck

Distribute the weight evenly to make driving easier.

Place the heaviest objects against the walls. This will keep the center of the space free for easier access and loading and unloading.

Place pictures and mirrors between mattresses or other soft objects.

If you do not have more than 1 mattress, you can use the same trick with sofa cushions.

Load couches vertically. Couches and loveseats can take up very expensive floor space. A good way to avoid this is to place the couch on the end (arm side) and make it vertical. This is especially useful if you were unable to take your couch apart.

Secure furniture with straps. Many rental moving van and trucks come with straps that you can use to tie down your belongings. When you pick up the truck, ask the agent if belts are included.
